Drama at Cumnor House School for Girls is one of the many ways we make learning come alive.

It is taught as a weekly lesson to all year groups and pupils are given many opportunities to develop their dramatic skills through acting exercises, voice projection games and exercises, confidence building tasks, stagecraft and improvisation activities, as well as through reading and performing play-scripts. We also look at the role of media in the performing arts and make use of the technology available to us.

There is an after school and weekend drama club available to pupils and each year group has the opportunity to perform in a fully staged and costumed production during the school year. Our Pre Prep girls usually present our Christmas Nativity, often written in-house presenting original songs and script.  Years 3 & 4 will join together to present a musical based on a famous tale and Year 5 tackle Shakespeare. Year 6 stage the senior production which is generally a well-known musical, with opportunities for all to play a main role or be part of the chorus. Previous years have seen exciting productions of We Will Rock You, Annie and Suessical, to name a few!

Cumnor Girls are lucky to have a designated permanent stage area with theatrical lighting and access to full sound equipment, including a set of professional radio microphones which help enhance the production quality of our shows.

From Year 3 pupils have the opportunity to take small group Speech and Communication classes as a paid additional Club, which enables them to enter LAMDA examinations.

The School has a strong tradition of entering some pupils from Year 1 upwards into the Poetry & Prose Section of the local Coulsdon & Purley Music and Drama Festival.

We have a bright, spacious well equipped art room here at Cumnor Girls School, where pupils are given the tools and skills to express their feelings and ideas and to continue to communicate visually throughout their learning journey.

Students work in both two and three dimensions, drawing from their own and each other’s lives, communities and cultures as well as those of children living around the world. They learn about artists, both past and present and how to observe, appreciate and find inspiration in the natural world and all its wonders.

All students have a sketchbook in which to experiment, research and develop their ideas and to record their progress.

The girls learn how to use all their senses; to look carefully when drawing from observation, to handle and control equipment and to experiment with art tools and materials before using them to create finished artworks. Self-belief and the ability to look, listen, evaluate, discuss and quietly focus are highlighted and developed.

They are helped to understand that whilst they may be at different stages of development they can and will reach their goals, in their own time and whilst having fun. The motto in the art room is “be kind to yourself and others”. The aim is for everyone to find success and to welcome creativity into their lives. The ability to see, draw, paint and make is absolutely teachable.

For year 3-6 students, Art lessons take place in the dedicated Art room with our specialist Art teacher for one and a half hours each week.

Students with particular enthusiasm and talent are encouraged to apply for Art Scholarships at Senior Schools and are given additional opportunities to extend their skills, and advice on scholarship expectations and how best to assemble an art portfolio.
