Once again I find myself sitting at my desk wondering what to write for my Head’s message this week. As always in a school as busy as ours the answer and indeed content is never too hard to find.
Our week began with an assembly about wisdom, comparing the academic wisdom of ‘The Three Wise Men’ and the wisdom of discernment required when considering how our actions might affect others. Discernment is the ability to choose right from wrong, that small voice inside that tells you when a course of action, which may appear wise, isn’t quite right or that it would be damaging to your morality. I have challenged the boys to make wise choices based on knowledge and discernment.
I was very pleased to welcome Cory Lowde, Headmaster of Box Hill School, to share his wealth of experience in a presentation on the ‘Teenage Brain’ on Monday evening. I am sure all the parents that attended will agree, it was an excellent and informative lecture that offered far more insight on how to develop parenting skills for any age rather than just the teenage years. A key takeaway from the evening was that parenting is not easy and not an exact science that is the same for every child. We have to work hard at it and at times it will be difficult and we will all make mistakes. This is part of the adventure we travel as parents, an ever changing and developing journey that we can improve over time.
I would like to thank Mrs Grant for chairing the Wednesday evening PTA meeting. It is remarkable the amount of hard work that goes on behind the scenes, to deliver the excellent schedule of activities and events designed to bring the Cumnor community together. Please do support the events that are publicised as they are great fun and a very good way to meet new families and maybe make new friends. Thank you to the entire PTA team for their efforts.
As we enter the weekend I shall be reading further comments from our recent Parent Survey. Thank you to all the families that have responded so far. I am very keen to receive positive and developmental feedback for the school and take every comment very seriously. Once the survey has closed I shall be contacting parents and acting on matters that have been shared. If you are happy with the education your child is receiving at Cumnor House, please do also comment as this really helps me to create an accurate picture of the school.
For those children that have started the rugby season with fixtures this week and last, well done. Rugby is a great sport and very character and discipline building. We have a great history of successful rugby players at Cumnor, including ex Head Boy and England World Cup star Elliot Daly, as well as ex England rugby captain Chris Robshaw. Who knows perhaps your son may be following a similar path to success in the future.
I have also noticed that children are bringing different types of school, sports and swimming bags to school, Paw Patrol to Football Club bags. I must remind you that we have a black and red sports bag available to purchase, and these are just as much part of our uniform as the famous Red Blazer.
Have a great weekend.
