Head Boy’s Blog

This is my last blog as Head Boy of Cumnor House School, yet I have called it New Beginnings – the same title I gave my very first blog.

Because nothing ends without something new beginning in its place; without the past diffusing into the future; without the threads of continuity weaving through time.

Even so, it is not the easiest thing to say goodbye to a family which I have been part of for 11 years of my life. Thank you for having me, believing in me, supporting me and teaching me every step of the way.

To all the leavers of 2020, I wish you all the very best as you move on. This poem is dedicated to you all.

Everything touches, life interweaves

From the toddler that enters to the teenager that leaves.

Teachers and students, learning and play,

School is buzzing with activities of every array.

Woodwind and strings, brass and choirs,

Resound within the Minster’s spires.

From the first cautious note to the accomplished player,

Everything touches, layer upon layer.

First kick or century, touchdown or catch,

Life’s lessons are learnt in the course of the match.

Tournaments and fixtures, glory and pain,

Everything touches, links in a chain.

Chess and calligraphy, drama club and art

Cake sales and film nights, so much to take part,

Ski trips and tours, residentials and plays,

Everything touches and the camaraderie stays.

Belief, compassion, courage, integrity and endeavour

Taught to us now, to last forever.

Tears and laughter, sweat and graft

Everything touches, present and past.

Those gone before and those yet to be born,

The passing of each year heralds a new dawn.

Boys become men, through distance and time,

Everyone touches, marching along the same line.

Look all around and what do you see

Everything touches, one Cumnor family,

Look all around and what do you see

Everything touches and Cumnor, you have touched me.
