When should you apply for a nursery school place?
Finding and applying for the perfect nursery can be a daunting task – it may be the very first form of organised education that your child has experienced; it is important to consider a number of factors to ensure that your child is given the best experiences and opportunities for learning, setting them up for long term success.
What is nursery, and what can you expect?
Nursery is an organised educational program for young children, often tailored for those aged between 2 and 4 years old. Nursery is often a child’s first experience of the world outside their home, where they meet new adults, begin to form their first friendships, and are exposed to a multitude of new experiences before starting school.
Nursery school is all about learning through adult-led and open ended play activities, allowing young children to choose their own route for learning and develop at their own pace.
A nursery curriculum consists largely of early years foundation and development in preparation for future learning. At Cumnor House, our curriculum consists of:
- Personal, social and emotional wellbeing
- Positive attitudes and dispositions towards learning
- Social skills
- Attention skill and persistence
- Language and communication
- Problem solving, reasoning and numbering
- Knowledge and understanding of the world
- Physical development
- Creative development
Nursery is designed to ease young children into education by offering a caring and warm environment that supports young learners. Our nursery curriculum follows the Early Years Foundation Stage, and we introduce learning and challenge through play to ensure that all children thrive. Each child is given one to one teaching and is treated as an individual, in order to make excellent progress with their all-round development.
When should you start your application?
Applying for a nursery place is very much down to your individual circumstances, but an application should be placed in good time, traditionally before your child’s third birthday. However, many schools will take students before this age, so it is worth checking around.
Cumnor House is one of these exceptions, with our private nursery starting from age 2 and above. Some nurseries have long waiting lists, so an early application might mean you are able to secure the place you really want. The more time you allow for research, the more time you’ll have to look around different settings, and find the best option for your family – and, ultimately, your child.
Do your research and arrange a visit!
Once you’ve done a little research and are happy with what you hear and see, it would be prudent to arrange a visit so you can really get a feel for the place. Before you go, note down the things that are most important to you, and any questions you may have. You may also want to take your little one along to have a look too; after all, it will be them who is starting their educational journey there.
When you find the nursery that fits your needs and requirements, you will need to secure your child’s place. Nursery admission processes can vary widely between schools and age groups, so it’s best to ask your chosen school as soon as possible. You will then receive the appropriate documentation to be completed, or details on how to apply online. If you are offered a place within the school, you may be required to pay a deposit to secure it.
If you are looking to visit Cumnor House to see our fantastic nursery facilities then we hold daily tours between 9.30am – 10.15am. To arrange a tour of our nurseries at either our term time nursery, Purley or year round nursery, South Croydon, please contact our nursery admissions team.
