How we teach

From a very young age, we support our children in their development of a sense of curiosity, open-mindedness, perseverance, reflection and critical thinking.

Fostering a love of learning

We recognise that children learn well when they are actively engaged in understanding concepts, using a wide range of techniques to ensure that the wonder of learning stays alive.

Academic stretch

We are never content with our children knowing 'enough'. We will always seek ways to stretch their knowledge, challenge the way they think, and push them outside of their comfort zone in a way that is both supportive and exciting.

Personalised tracking and feedback

Every child matters. We spend time as a team looking at assessment data, analysing every child's trajectory and seeing where interventions might be required, in order to continue to challenge and understand where to place appropriate levels of support.

21st century teaching techniques

We integrate the very best specialist teaching with modern technology to ensure our children have the best of both worlds. We use the latest learning applications to ensure that every child is delivered an education that is tailored to them, whatever their learning style.

INDIVIDUALISED LEARNING

We have a flexible approach to learning that can be adapted to the needs of all pupils.

Cumnor House is an inclusive environment in which children thrive. We are dedicated to supporting all children to learn effectively and celebrate all children’s achievements, regardless of ability or difficulties.

We understand and appreciate that children develop at different speeds so we focus on the development of the individual which we measure, monitor and evaluate on a regular basis.

The ethos here at Cumnor House is to be your best self. We tailor work and expectations on an individualised approach thus allowing each child to reach their own potential – to be their best self. This way, pupils are driven and inspired by one another.

Special Educational Needs support (SEND).

At Cumnor House, we have a dedicated SENCo who is also a qualified teacher. The SENCo has day-to-day responsibility for the operation of SEND policy and coordination of specific provision made to support individual pupils with SEND.

The SENCo provides professional guidance to colleagues and will work closely with staff, parents and other agencies to ensure that pupils with SEND receive appropriate support and high-quality teaching.

Responsibilities may include: liaising with teachers and support staff to ensure provision is in place effectively, being a key point of contact for external agencies, advising on a graduated approach to SEND support and meeting with and liaising with parents to ensure effective provision. Pupils with SEND will have an IEP (individual education plan) put in place which will outline support needed e.g. intervention groups, differentiated activities or weekly meetings with SENCo.

Everywhere we saw evidence of lively and careful teaching, and the boys were vociferous about how much they enjoyed lessons. The kind of school where boys use pizza to learn about fractions and football teams to get their heads round percentages.
