From Handel to Hancock
We regard music as an essential part of every boy's education, and pride ourselves on outstanding facilities, a huge range of activities and a long and distinguished history of musical achievement. By performing and listening to music ranging from Frederic Handel to Herbie Hancock your son's horizons and musical appreciation will be broadened in many ways.
The department is led by the Director of Music who has two permanent staff and is supported by nineteen peripatetic staff. The Music House facilities consist of classrooms, practice rooms and a music technology room incorporating keyboards and computers for compositional purposes. All boys in Years 2-8 have two music lessons a week as part of the curriculum.
Boys audition for both the award winning Junior Choir and the Cumnor Choristers. Over the last few years the Choristers have performed at St. Peters Basilica (Vatican), Montserrat Monastery (Spain), St. Dominic’s Church (Malta) and at the O2 Arena in London.
Of the eleven instrumental groups; the Super Strings, Woodwind Group, Jazz Band and Main Orchestra enable boys to learn ensemble skills at varying levels. Smaller ‘specialist’ teams such as Cello Group, Senior and Junior string quartets and Percussion Ensemble allow for greater focus on individuals and technique.
Every year the school holds both formal and informal concerts, the House Music Competition, a composition competition, annual school musical, Associated Board exams and a variety of music tours, trips and festivals.
